The 2009 World War II movie Inglourious Basterds is a visionary piece that set the tone for future Quentin Tarantino works as well. Despite being heavily violent, and equally grappling, what sets the movie apart from others in the genre is the depth of the story and the way it is represented.  A huge bunch of war-related movies exist that are based on Nazis, and the small fights that were happening to curb them. But Inglourious Basterds seems like a plot that is heavily rooted in reality, yet equally fictional.

It can be said that not only was the film a monetary success but it greatly impacts the viewer’s mind. This is why people tend to wonder if Inglourious Basterds is based on a true story. Let’s unravel the true stories that inspired the impeccable fiction that succeeded in assassinating Hitler.

Is Inglourious Basterds Based on a True Story?

Inglourious Basterds focuses on a Nazi-hunting unit, ran by a Jewish-American military unit led by Aldo Raine. This short unit consists of merely eight men and their mission is to harm as many Nazi officials as they possibly can. Thanks to the vision of Tarantino, as well as the roles portrayed by Brad Pitt, Shosanna Dreyfus, and Eli Roth, movie fanatics have started to question whether the movie is based on true events or not.

The dangerous Jew Hunter in Inglourious Basterds who goes by the name of Hans Landa is essentially a fake character. But the inspiration for the same is derived from real people and figures that existed during the Nazi times. Not painting a clear derivation, Tarantino essentially presents Landa as a charming yet extremely selfish and cruel entity. In short, the man checks all the boxes to be a typical villain. Looking at the bigger picture it can be said that the character culminated with the intention to point towards the Nazis as a whole. Tarantino essentially took every single negative aspect of the Nazis and their ideologies and portrayed them through Landa.

Technically, looking for the origins of the Inglourious Basterds military unit will point in the direction of an actual unit that existed. It might be a very exaggerated resemblance to the exact team, but there are some similarities. The actual Inglourious Basterds unit operated by the name of X-Troop and had no intentions of murdering people. These men simply worked under the British government to sell Nazi information so that Germany could be infiltrated, or they could at least seek some revenge for what has happened to their kin.

What if the Inglourious Basterds unit was inspired by more than one unit? There have been reports of a similar team to X-Trrop operated by the American government. Essentially, these reports state that Brad Pitt’s character is completely derived from the said team. The mentioned team later became the foundation for the modern-day CIA as well. Reportedly, the initial team very heavily inspired the character of Aldo Raine, the eccentric leader of Inglourious Basterds.

There are so many tangents of Inglourious Basterds that meet with the actual happenings. However, there is no denying the fact that the actual military units operating against Nazis did not intend to murder or harm Nazi officials. Having a bigger target was more on par with their style of operation. The military units operated as a network to gather information and release it to the appropriate governments. Unlike Inglourious Basterds, the motto of these fighters was to defeat the whole system rather than kill a few pawns.

Talking about tangents it cannot be denied that Hitler was targeted by a lot of people. There have been no confirmed instances of that happening inside a movie theater though. The reality was more that people tried to poison the dictator, or killed his political supporters. Tarantino essentially took an interesting approach by looking for a less cliche assassination attempt. The director simply chose to create a revised version of real-life incidents.

There is no adequate answer about the legitimacy of the plot of Inglourious Basterds. The movie succeeded in creating an entertaining experience that also presented a travesty in all seriousness. Even though Tarantino has succeeded in taking parts from real history, he inherently creates a parallel universe for viewers. Inglourious Basterds fails to completely follow the real-life incidents, yet makes it believable for the viewers.
